Lea Devon Sorrentino A New Age, 2012
Can a world cease to exist? It can if each world has its own reality or perception. If you consider that a relationship starts a new reality, an existence with a new person, than many of us have had several realities. Sometimes simultaneously, and not always lasting relationships have propelled individual worlds in one direction or another. A world that contained a friendship that, or a significant other can and does end. That world of ‘you and them’ is not the reality that is currently occurring.
When these relationships conclude often times left behind are relics that get gathered and stored. A perception of who you were during that time can be remembered through these items, but that time can never be altered or changed. In this installation I am presenting my collected objects over the past 18 years. People who no longer share my reality are on display to be obliterated. Each day of every weekend during the run of the show the items on a pedestal will be destroyed, and the remains will be placed in the middle of the install.
The idea is to try and permanently conclude that world. Except that it no longer exists. That what is carried with me has shaped my current reality, but the remnants of the old world do not keep that world alive.
